Mary Lash, our first pirate, has decided to drop anchor and become a landlubber. She will no longer be a daily part of PHS but she will continue her 4-H activities at her home in Downey. She wanted to complete this year but doctor’s orders prevailed.
Ms Lash started teaching in 1950 at what is now known as the West Campus. When our campus was built in ’53, Ms Lash came here and has been in the same Home Economics’ room ever since. She and another colleague started the Corsaire's Club, which means pirate in French. It is the longest running service club on our campus. Each year at the Corsaire’s alumni brunch the current members hear the many stories of service on campus and within the community. She is the legendary pirate that has served, educated and led more deck-hands than can be numbered.
Mary is not just a pirate. She has been involved with 4-H since birth, competed from ages 10 through 21. She then became a leader where still the members work and meet at her home. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Gamma Zeta chapter since 1960. She held the office of president and has been the recipient of the Golden Rose award. In 2001 Ms Lash was inducted to the Downey High Hall of Fame. The United Methodist Church of Downey is her place of worship where she also dedicated many active years of service. Some of her past duties were worship leader, Sunday school teacher, tailor, and chef.
Mary Lash, our first pirate, has close to 66 years of teaching. Her treasure chest of memories and experiences is overflowing. She is at her home port now, her ship is docked. We won’t see her around PHS but when we pass her home for a visit we will continue to see her involved with students. She is an amazing inspiration to all.
