February 11, 2020 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
5:45 p.m. by Suzanne Fraser at Angela Loya’s home on February 11, 2020.
Inspiration: Beverly Todd read a short valentine themed book entitled, I Love You, Little Pookie, as a well as a short verse from the book, For a Friend.
Members in Attendance: (16) Karen Bowen, Irene Lonergan, Lisa Wood, Claudette Bowie, Maria Lopez, Susan Lance, Angela Loya, Anne Sivley, Suzanne Fraser, Elaine Hoffmann, Linda Norman, Bev Todd, Sumie Imada, Shirley Lamphear, Camille Bunch, Shauna Grover
GUEST: Dr. Deborah Hamm, director of UTEACH and Claudia Ramos, DKG scholarship recipient.
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the December 3rd and January 11th meeting were reviewed. Anne Sively moved to accept the minutes and Sumie Imada seconded for the December 3rd meeting. Irene Lonergan moved to accept the January 11th minutes and Sumie Imada seconded. Both submissions of minutes were followed with attending members’ unanimous approval.
Treasurer’s Report:
⬥Shauna Grover submitted treasurer’s report for January. The January report stated that the beginning balance was $6,747.04 with no additional receipts or disbursements resulting in a maintained balance on hand of $6,747.04. The minutes were submitted for approval by Susan Lance and seconded by Sumie Imada and then unanimously approved to file for audit by attending members. Shauna Grover reminded members to submit any receipts for reimbursement as well as payments for attendance at Spring Conference. Gamma Zeta chapter currently has 28 active members, 3 reserve members (Dottie Poole, Mary Lash, & Linda Johnson), and 1 honorary member = 32.
Program:
⬥Claudia Ramos, DKG scholarship recipient, shared about her current experience with student teaching in a 1st grade classroom at Holmes Elementary in Long Beach Unified School District. She also spoke about her progress with completing testing and assignments necessary for obtaining her teaching credential. She thanked members for their continued emotional and financial support.
⬥Dr. Deborah Hamm, director of UTEACH program, shared about the unique year-long residency program for student teachers. Teachers participate in 2 assignments (primary & upper grade) over the course of a traditional school year (Sept.-May). The teachers participate in a ½ day student teaching assignment in tandem with afternoon method classes over the course of the year and are also placed in pairs in classrooms vs individual assignments to facilitate collaboration and planning. Dr. Hamm also shared that the organization provides financial assistance to student teachers to offset the high cost of CSET, CBEST, RICA and other required tests.

Old Business:
⬥Suzanne Fraser shared that Gamma Zeta Chapter Rules had been updated according to International expectations. The updated rules were submitted to members twice via email with changes in Finance, Audit #5.3. There was a discussion of the conflicting wording in State and International rules. Suzanne will contact the chair of the rules committee to clarify. Until then, members unanimously voted to accept the Chapter Rules as sent and amend if needed after final clarification on Audit #5.3 is obtained.
New Business:
⬥ A vote for the incoming slate of officers for 2020-22: Co-Presidents- Shirley Lamphear & Kimberly Goforth; !st Vice-President-Maria Lopez; 2nd Vice President- Elaine Hoffmann; Recording Secretary-Lisa Wood; Corresponding Secretary-Carey Van Gremp, was taken and there was unanimous approval by members present. A Treasurer will be appointed by the Co-Presidents.
⬥ Suzanne encouraged members to attend upcoming Area XII Spring Installation Conference to support our newly elected officers. Gamma Zeta has been tasked with manning the registration table so members who were planning on attending were asked to volunteer.
⬥Members celebrated the nomination of Susan Lance for the CA Distinguished Service Award based on all her philanthropic ventures with Children’s Benefit League of LB. Sue accepted the honor on behalf of the Gamma Zeta Chapter and will receive her award at the DKG conference in Santa Clara, May 1-3.
⬥Susan Lance passed out a Bunco flyer to members detailing member expectations ($10 value wrapped (black, white, red) gift; 1+ guest; dissemination and/or posting of BUNCO flyers. Members also signed up for additional food responsibilities or jobs during the event.
⬥Suzanne passed out a Chi State (LIFE) flyer, which encourages members to utilize smile.amazon.com with donations preset to LIFE when ordering items from AMAZON. LIFE organization will obtain a .5% donation for each purchase throughout the year. Members are also encouraged to purchase the 2019-2020 book of the year, The Secret Life of Mrs. London by Rebecca Rosenberg.
⬥2 flyers regarding legislation and initiatives were also provided for members for review.
Jared Box Project: Members filled and decorated 35 Jared Boxes that will be delivered to Miller Children’s Hospital.

⬥Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10th at 5:00 p.m. at Clearwater Building in Paramount. This meeting is our Bunco fundraiser. All members need to bring a raffle gift for Bunco as well as donations for our “Take A Moment For Me” basket for the Area XII Conference silent auction (wellness items such as lotions, tea, cookies, pedicure items, stress relief, self help or inspirational items, etc.). If you are unable to attend one or both of these events please drop off your contributions to another member or at Angela’s house.
