April 8, 2019 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
5:44 p.m. by Suzanne Fraser at Karen Bowen’s home on April 8, 2019.
Inspiration: Beverly Todd read an article by Florence Connell entitled “What does Delta Kappa Mean to Me?” that was preserved in the chapter’s memory book
Members in Attendance: Karen Bowen, Claudette Bowie, Tammy Harter, Susan Lance, Elaine Hoffmann, Angela Loya,
Lisa Wood, Suzanne Fraser, Sumie Imada, Anne Sivley, Linda Norman, Beverly Todd
GUEST(S): Dr. Margie Armstrong, Area XII Director; She shared a little about upcoming western theme of conference and encouraged members to attend in order to celebrate our selected chapter’s “Golden Gal (Golden Rose recipient)”
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the February 4th meeting were reviewed and a misspelling of a member’s name was noted and corrected. Elaine Hoffman moved to accept the minutes and Sumi Imada seconded followed with attending members’ unanimous approval.
Treasurer’s Report:
⬥Susan Lance shared a double treasurer’s report encompassing both March and April due to March’s meeting serving solely as a fundraising event not formal meeting. The March report stated that the beginning balance for March was $5180.38 with receipts of $120.00 for membership dues and $224.00 for Area XII Breakfast bringing the total to $5524.38. The April report stated that the beginning balance was $5524.38 with receipts for $1085.00 for Bunco donations; $165 for Bunco raffle; and $112.00 for Spring Conference payment bringing total to $1362.00. March disbursements for Bunco food, Chi State Publications, Area XII Olive Garden gift card and DKG CA convention ad totaled $677.19, which reduced total to $6,209.19-the current balance on hand.
Program:
⬥Karen Bowen, Elaine Hoffman, and Beverly Todd presented a program on Women’s History, which involved members matching pictures of famous women in history to names and then quotes. Suzanne and members sang Happy Birthday and cut a ceremonial cake to honor Gamma Zeta chapter’s 65th birthday.
Committee Reports:
⬥Program- Karen Bowen (lead) + Beverly Todd + Kim Goforth; Members presented a Women’s history program
⬥Finance- Susan Lance (lead) + Shauna Grover + Lisa Wood; No new items to report
⬥Membership- Angela Loya (lead) + Linda Norman + Maria Lopez + Dorothy Poole; Angela Loya presented members with membership longevity pins-Elaine Hoffman (25 years); Beverly Todd (20 years); Jackie Wayman (30 years) not present; and Linda Johnson (30 years) not present
⬥Communications- Shirley Lamphear (lead) + Jackie Wayman + Andrea Guerrero; Members signed cards to honor Mary Lash’s 91st birthday; a get well for Linda Johnson’s surgery; and congratulations on baby delivery for Shauna Grover. The chapter received thank you notes from Long Beach Miller Children’s hospital for the donation of Jared boxes and PEP scholarship committee for the chapter’s $200.00 donation for scholarships for Paramount High School students. A flyer detailing an upcoming PEP scholarship Casino Night fundraiser on Friday, April 26th was passed around to members.
⬥Scholarship- Irene Lonergan (lead) + Claudette Bowie + Tammy Harter + Juanita Rivas; Claudette shared that 21 potential scholarship applications were reviewed with committee members selecting a local Long Beach recipient and mother of 3 along with 2 alternate recipients.
⬥Nominations-Nomination committee will be activated in September 2019 with installation of officers in 2020
⬥Legislative-No new business to report
Old Business:
⬥ Members can continue to submit THAT hours online which will be recorded for upcoming year
⬥ Original donations from chapter were dispersed to assemble 6 smaller baskets for auction during the Area XII breakfast
⬥Suzanne reminded members about upcoming Area XII conference in May and that any member interested in attending can receive
reimbursement for registration fee via submittal of documentation of registration and attendance to chapter treasurer
⬥ Members Linda Norman, Karen Bowen, Suzanne Fraser and Anne Sively will meet on Wednesday, May 8th at 10:00 a.m. at Angela Loya’s home to sort and distribute previously collected books for donation to 4 selected organizations.
⬥Suzanne reminded members who are ready to pay upcoming 2019-2020 dues to put money in circulated envelopes
Members interested in receiving 30 professional development hours by attending Southwest Regional Conference July 16-19 in Costa Mesa will need to register online to complete application and review details.
New Business:
⬥Stipends for Legislative Study Session in June are available for members fill out with online application form due by April 15th.
⬥Chapter Service Awards were presented to honor 2 members for their outstanding service to chapter: Sumie Imada (40+ year member) for outstanding leadership in grant in aid scholarships and Susan Lance (40+ years) for outstanding contribution to community public service, Long Beach Children’s Benefit League.
⬥Gamma Zeta chapter completed applications for chapter to receive 5 star chapter honor award as well as Youth at Risk Service projects award for Jared Boxes and Whole Child
⬥Members in attendance received a drawing ticket for an Easter basket with Linda Norman being the lucky winner

⬥Members sang closing song.
⬥Meeting adjourned at 7:06 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for May 13th at Shirley Lamphear’s home.
