Program:
Susan Lissi and Joni Williams, National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease champions, shared that the organization is dedicated solely to women’s heart health. Susan shared her background story of family heart disease including her own journey of navigating hospital protocols and eventually having a quadruple bypass. Joni shared that as a registered nurse she was aware of her family history of heart disease but after a major car accident went to see a cardiologist and then learned of her prognosis. Their heart events brought them together as proponents for women’s heart education. The ladies shared that heart disease is the number one killer of women due to misdiagnosis (i.e. panic attacks, muscle strains, etc.) because the signs and symptoms of heart attacks are very different for women than men. Members were presented with bookmarks detailing heart attack warning signs as well as a gift bag containing a plethora of informational handouts. The ladies encouraged members to seek out baseline screening in order to develop awareness of personal health and then to utilize this information as needed to advocate for treatment during a possible heart event.
