December 10, 2018 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
5:54 p.m. by Suzanne Fraser at the Clearwater Building on December 10, 2018.
Inspiration: Beverly Todd read an excerpt from the book entitled “Wise Men Seek Him” which focused on the topic of wisdom.
Members in Attendance: Shauna Grover, Elizandra Lopez, Karen Bowen, Jill Gutierrez, Shirley Lamphear, Irene Lonergan, Heather Van Eade, Claudette Bowie, Susan Lance, Juanita Rivas, Jackie Wayman, Camille Bunch, Elaine Hoffmann. Angela Loya, Lisa Wood, Suzanne Fraser, Andrea Gutierrez, Linda Norman, Beverly Todd
GUEST(S): Lola Guerrero (sister of Andrea) and Jane Medina (K teacher in Downey)
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the November meeting were read, reviewed, and approved in a motion by members at large.
Treasurer’s Report:
⬥Shauna Grover submitted treasurer’s report stating that the opening balance was $5,961.38 with collections/donations for Schools for Africa in the amount of $33.00 and less $25.00 for guest speaker donation to Women Heart which brought the closing balance to $5,969.38. This report will be filed for audit.
Program:
⬥Alejandro Gonzalez and Robbie Briseno from The Whole Child organization were on hand to participate in the chapter’s annual family holiday donation project. Alejandro shared background on the Whole Child organization and provided insight on the selection of the 19 families (76 adults and 10 children) that the chapter would be supporting through donation of restaurant and movie gift cards. Members wrapped gift cards and filled out holiday cards according to provided instructions.
Committee Reports:
⬥Program- Karen Bowen (lead) Members informed of upcoming book exchange for January meeting. Members will bring a children’s book to be donated to either Miller’s Children Hospital or Ronald McDonald House as well as be prepared to give a “book talk” on a favorite author.
⬥Finance- Susan Lance (lead) Member donation to cover overage cost of Whole Child project was noted and appreciated. Member Mary Lash will be donating to Whole Child organization on behalf of 4H club as well.
⬥Membership- Angela Loya (lead) Members encouraged to bring a guest. After guest has attended a few times and is interested in joining-a bid for initiating will be put forth by members at large.
⬥Communications- Shirley Lamphear (lead) Christmas card to the City of Paramount was issued; Thank you cards to Linda and Ann from Women Heart and sympathy card to Dottie Poole were sent out; Minutes from November meeting to Joy and Bev were mailed out
⬥Scholarship- Irene Lonergan (lead) Picture from scholarship reception was shared; Handout for Leadership retreat in Sacramento in January was shared. Registration for event and hotel are due Dec. 28th; Continuing Education award application deadline is December 31st to receive monies to attend conferences and professional development; scholarship application for advanced degrees and awards 1st deadline is Dec. 31st /2nd deadline is June 1st;
⬥Nominations-Nomination committee will be activated in September 2019 with installation of officers in 2020
⬥Legislative-nothing to report at this time
Old Business:
⬥ Suzanne shared that yearbook continues to be reviewed and edited by attending members and that draft #3 will be emailed in January along with December meeting minutes.
⬥Members participated in Left, Right, Center game to fund raise for Schools for Africa.
New Business:
⬥ Suzanne reminded members to bring $6.00 for food costs for January 9th meeting as well as a children’s book for donation.
Adjournment:
⬥Members sang closing song.
⬥Meeting adjourned at 7:43 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for January 9th at Kim Goforth’s home in Long Beach.
