January 9, 2019 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
5:47 p.m. by Suzanne Fraser at the home of Kim Goforth.
Inspiration: Beverly Todd read ‘Get Real Resolutions’ for 2019 from Family Circle (Jan. issue).
Members in Attendance: Shauna Grover, Karen Bowen, Heather Van Eade, Claudette Bowie, Maria Lopez, Jackie Wayman, Angela Loya, Kathleen Shivers, Sumie Imada, Kim Goforth, Suzanne Fraser, Linda Norman, Beverly Todd.
Thank you to those members who either called or sent RSVP/regrets through Evite for the meeting.
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the December meeting were read, reviewed, and amended by Shauna; Financial Report correction of increase $4 to the $33 for Schools for Africa to $37. They were approved with amendment in a motion by members at large.
Treasurer’s Report:
⬥Shauna Grover submitted treasurer’s report stating that the opening balance was $5,973.38 with collections/donations for Schools for Africa in the amount of $145.00 (Left,Right,Center) and $300 for the Whole Child. Disbursements were $1300 for Whole Child expenses which brought the closing balance to $5,118.38. This report will be filed for audit.
It was recommended by Claudette to use a Reimbursement Request form when handing in receipts to Shauna (form will be available at meetings). This recommendation was accepted and will be used starting in February.
Program:
⬥Continuing our‘Getting to Know You’ goal three more members let us know a little more about themselves, then each member shared a favorite author/book and or genre. Some of the authors named were: Paretsky, Ezra Keats, L. Hayes, Chaikin, J. Comey, S. Vowell, T. Burrell, HyeonSeo Lee, L. See, D. VanLear, M. Obama, M. Angelou. Members brought books to donate to Millers Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. These books will be dropped off in February with our Jared Boxes. Sumie very generously donated her book, “Becoming” by Michelle Obama, to be raffled for donations to Schools for Africa. Angela won the raffle and we raised $34.
Committee Reports:
⬥Program- Karen Bowen (lead) - An email will be sent to inform members which Jared Box items are still needed.
⬥Finance- Susan Lance (lead) - None
⬥Membership- Angela Loya (lead) Members encouraged to bring a guest to future meetings. After guest has attended a few times and is interested in joining-a bid for initiating will be put forth by members at large. Congratulations to Linda Johnson on the birth of another grandchild!
⬥Communications- Shirley Lamphear (lead) - None
⬥Scholarship- Irene Lonergan (lead) - None
⬥Nominations-Nomination committee will be activated in September 2019 with installation of officers in 2020
⬥Legislative-None
Old Business:
⬥ Sue has finished sending books to our Literacy Project recipient (related to Dolly Parton project). Members discussed if we want to continue this project even though Sue never received any indication if the books were received, etc. A decision was made to table this to our February meeting to get more information from Sue and Shirley.
New Business:
⬥ Jared Boxes – Angela brought a poster of the items that are needed for our February meeting (35 each) and asked members to sign up. Karen will send an email to all members so those not present can sign up as well. Angela also asked for members to please help her set-up for the meeting on Sunday Feb. 3rd. Please call her for the time, etc. if you are available.
⬥Members sang closing song.
⬥Meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for February 4th at Angela’s home, 2500 E. 70th St., Long Beach.

- Bunco – March 13th meeting Fund Raiser, bring friends and collect donations if friends can’t come. We will continue with $20 donation and selling of raffle tickets. All members need to bring a wrapped gift (white elephant/ $5-10 gift) for the raffle. Pizza, salad and cookies will be served. A pre-Bunco meeting will be arranged by Finance to assign details. A flyer about the event will be sent by email to all members so you can start your invitations.
- Area XII Conference, April 13. – Flyers for the Conference were handed out and will be emailed. Your reservations are due to Shauna by March 9, with $28 checks made to Gamma Zeta. We will contribute a $25 Olive Garden gift card as well as a Coffee/Tea/Hot Choc./Goodie Basket for the silent auction. All members need to start bringing these items to the Feb. meeting as the Basket is due to Area in March.
- Golden Rose Nomination – At the Area Conference each chapter presents a member they have selected for the Golden Rose Award. Suzanne gave a handout that showed the past Golden Rose recipients from both Gamma Zeta and Alpha Chi. This handout will be emailed before our February meeting so members can nominate our recipient. Send your nomination to Suzanne before the February 4th meeting because we will be selecting our recipient at this meeting.
