October 8, 2018 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
5:37 p.m. by Suzanne Fraser at Angela Loya’s home on October 8, 2018.
Inspiration: Beverly Todd read an excerpt entitled “Being a Builder-Making a Contribution” by David Sandy.
Members continued the practice of playing the Get to know your Members” Mix, Freeze, Match activity in an effort to build community. 3 members shared background information as a launch for the activity.
Members in Attendance: Shauna Grover, Carey Van Gremp, Karen Bowen, Jill Gutierrez, Shirley Lamphear, Irene Lonergan, Claudette Bowie, Tammy Harter, Susan Lance, Maria Lopez, Juanita Rivas, Camille Bunch, Elaine Hoffmann, Angela Loya, Lisa Wood, Suzanne Fraser, Sumie Imada, Andrea Guerrero, Kimberly Goforth, Linda Norman, Beverly Todd
GUEST(S): Felice Strauss (Area XII Legislative Director)
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the September meeting were reviewed and corrections to 2 line items were noted. Sumie Imada moved to accept the minutes with corrections and Carey Van Gremp seconded followed with attending members’ unanimous approval.
Treasurer’s Report:
⬥Shauna Grover submitted treasurer’s report stating that the beginning balance was $3519.34 with receipts of $3340.00 in the form of dues and a member donation for scholarship bringing balance on hand to $6,859.34. She also shared that if our member’s dues are collected in totality by Oct. 15th, the chapter will be awarded a $20 certificate to offset the cost of 1 member’s registration at the DKG convention. Elaine Hoffmann moved to approve the report for audit and Karen Bowen seconded followed with attending members’ unanimous approval. Shauna reminded members that membership cards are permanent and will not be reissued each year.
Program:
Felice Strauss, Area XII Legislative Director, shared her background and journey into political activism. Ms. Strauss recommended that members establish a relationship with a legislator in order to address educational issues and bills as they arise. She provided a handout detailing tips on how to speak to a legislator as a starting point. Felice highlighted a few key bills that are currently up for vote at the federal level. She also shared various handouts providing members with information on 2018 voting recommendations for initiatives and offices from organizations such as CTA and League of Women Voters. Felice shared that current legislative information is available on DKG website.
Committee Reports:
⬥Program- Karen Bowen (lead); no new items to report at this time
⬥Finance- Susan Lance (lead); items shared in new business section
⬥Membership- Angela Loya (lead); members reviewed current contact information and will receive an email copy when directory has been updated
⬥Communications- Shirley Lamphear (lead); members will be notified each meeting of any correspondence sent out. Currently 4 members (Mary Lash, Dottie Poole, Janet Luya, and Pat Locke) as well as 1 guest (Grace Torres) have received cards since September meeting. Andrea and Shirley encouraged members to forward information and pictures to them for posting on chapter’s Facebook page. September minutes were mailed to Joy and Beverly and October minutes will be mailed out by Andrea.
⬥Scholarship- Irene Lonergan (lead); Tammy, Claudette, Irene, and Sumie will be attending a scholarship reception for Karen Duenas on October 12th. Irene shared information about an upcoming technology workshop entitled, “Technology: Bringing Us Together” on Saturday, October 20th at Thomas Edison school in Glendale from 8:30-3:00 for an $80.00 fee. Members are encouraged to contact Irene for further information.
⬥Nominations-Nomination committee will be activated in September 2019 with installation of officers in 2020
⬥Legislative-*addressed in program by guest speaker, Felice Strauss
Old Business:
⬥ Suzanne shared that she received confirmation at the President’s meeting that Mary Lash can change from active to honorary status as long as it is noted in the chapter’s standing rules. Suzanne presented a proposal to members to change Mary’s status to honorary with the chapter paying a $49.50 one-time fee as well as covering additional fees/dues. Susan Lance motioned to approve the proposal and Karen Bowen seconded with attending members unanimously approving. Communications committee will send out a note to Mary Lash notifying her of approved proposal.
⬥Recent classroom retiree Elaine Hoffman was presented with a retirement gift to honor her service.
New Business:
⬥Member Jessica Aragon verbally submitted her resignation from the chapter based on family commitments. A motion to approve the resignation was initiated by Susan Lance and seconded by Angela Loya with members voting regrettably in favor. Communications committee will send out a note of regret to Jessica and inform her of the possibility of reinstatement in the future.
⬥Susan Lance presented members with a Proposed Budget outlining and comparing past and future expenditures and revenue. Amendments were made to the 2018-2019 proposed expenditure column and members voted to accept the budget with Linda Norman beginning the motion and Sumie Imada seconding and all members in unanimous agreement. The proposed budget will be mailed out to members.
⬥Members reviewed, discussed, and edited Chapter Rules of Gamma Zeta. Edited chapter rules will be mailed with revisions in red font.
⬥Suzanne shared that the chapter received a certificate of participation from Chi State Project Chair for Jared Boxes.

⬥Members sang closing song.
⬥Meeting adjourned at 7:53 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for November 14th at Shauna Grover’s home. Featured speaker will be Susan Lissi from WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease.
