December 8, 2020 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order:
5:04 p.m. by Kim Goforth on the platform Zoom.
Inspirational:
Claudette Bowie shared “The Button Box”, a story of how the variety of buttons found in a sewing box are similar to the diversity of members of DKG.

Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the November meeting were reviewed and approved as read. Suzanne Fraser moved to accept the minutes and Irene Lonegran seconded followed with attending members’ unanimous approval.
Treasurer’s Report:
Suzanne Fraser shared the starting balance on hand of $6,510.39 with November receipts of $725.90 ($120 dues-Janet Luya and $605.90. The Whole Child donations-Sue, Kim, Tammy, Claudette, Lisa) and disbursements totaling $2,584.50 ($2,330.90 Whole Child Gift cards + 2$54.02 Life Fund Grant ) brining the current balance on hand to $4,651.37. The report was approved to be filed by members.
Program:
Vanessa Sedano presented a Powerpoint slide show on the The Whole Child organization. The organization offers services for families, single parent households, and single fathers with children. They currently can house up to 44 families/105 individuals and have serviced 80 families as of last year. The organization’s key goal is to keep families in housing to avoid the cycle of homelessness, which is often difficult to recover/graduate from. The presentation highlighted a recent family’s success story of their personal journey from former homeowners to homelessness and back to established homeowners. Vanessa shared of the organization’s recent commitment to empowering families educational journeys via funds from the BEZO grant, which allowed them to hire an educational specialist to support school aged children with obtaining resources such as laptops, supplies, etc. as well as guidance for college applications and admissions. Vanessa thanked the chapter for the recent donation of culturally sensitive books that were donated to their shared library as well the chapter’s continued generosity.
Kim Goforth encouraged members to post information about the Whole Child organization on FaceBook or other social media platforms to create awareness/support.
Old Business:
⬥December installation of Carey Von Gremp as corresponding secretary was conducted by Kim Goforth.
New Business:
⬥Members discussed the upcoming year’s group project, Jared Boxes. Angela shared that boxes can be filled with overage items from previous year along with new items from member collection Options such as having members pick up a box, fill it, and return it to Angela for distribution to Miller’s Children’s Hospital were shared. Members decided to revisit the assembly process next year when state guidelines for social distancing are presented/established.
⬥Claudette shared area 12 would give a stipend/scholarship for working teachers. First 20 people to apply $100 stipend to supplement what they had to buy. Application is on Area 12 website.
⬥Claudette also shared that DKG chapters don’t want to cancel the Area conference because of the potential loss of deposits while waiting on approval of state for COVID clearance. Members also discussed that loss of deposit might be eminent due to closure/bankruptcy of meeting facility, The Grand.
⬥Members Congratulated Maria Lopez for her recent engagement.
⬥Members honored Marilyn Ashley’s recent passing and her 55 years of service to DKG.
⬥Members celebrated member Janet Luya’s recent reinstatement. Suzanne Fraser shared there are no additional fees for former members to be reinstated and encouraged members to reach out to former members about rejoining the chapter.
