October 10, 2019 Meeting Minutes
Call to Order
5:55 p.m. by Karen Bowen at Angela Loya’s home on October 8, 2019.
Inspiration: Beverly Todd a few quotes on the topic, Kindness, from the book “When Action Follows Heart”. We continued our practice of getting to know our members with Irene Lonergan and Kathleen Shivers sharing their background information. We recognized and celebrated the October birthdays of attending members, Angela Loya and Carey Van Gremp.
Members in Attendance: (16) Karen Bowen, Irene Lonergan, Lisa Wood, Maria Lopez, Kathleen Shivers, Camille Bunch, Angela Loya, Anne Sivley, Elaine Hoffmann, Linda Norman, Bev Todd, Kim Goforth, Sumie Imada, Cary Von Gremp, Shauna Grover, Jackie Wayman
GUEST: Kaytlyn Flora, niece of member Shauna Grover and recent teaching credential graduate of CSULB, who is currently working as a substitute in both Long Beach and Paramount Unified School District.
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the September meeting were disseminated and reviewed. Angela Loya moved to accept the minutes and Irene Lonergan seconded followed with attending members’ unanimous approval.
Treasurer’s Report:
⬥Shauna Grover submitted treasurer’s report for October 10th which stated that the beginning balance was $7,149.93 with additional receipts of $1,142.50 (dues, donation-scholarship fund, Schools for Africa, bank statement reconciliation) and disbursements totaling $111.77 (state, international, area XII assessment fees, DKG CA fees, bank statement reconciliations bringing the balance on hand to $8,180.66. Shauna shared that the chapter audit was completed by member Karen Bowen and an explanation was provided to members about the bank reconciliations due to minor accounting errors. Gamma Zeta chapter currently has 28 active members, 3 reserve members (Dottie Poole, Mary Lash, & Linda Johnson), and 1 honorary member (Dora Jacildo) = 32.
Committee Reports:
⬥Program- no new items to report at this time.
Finance-Shauna Grover is in communication with Susan Lance and Suzanne Fraser and proposed budget will be submitted to members at next meeting
⬥Membership- A power point presentation, entitled “Each One Bring One”, was provided by member Maria Lopez which highlighted the roles of DKG members in activism, leadership, and new member recruitment. At the conclusion of the meeting, members discussed some possible opportunities to seek out candidates from college fairs, student teaching candidates, etc. Angela Loya shared a rose clutch purse which she will submit to Linda Moore at Chi State as a possible sales item for DKG members.
⬥Communications- Member Juanita Rivas expressed gratitude at receiving card for her father’s recent passing. An update on Mary Lash’s health was provided as she has had 2 stints in her heart recently but is still very active with her commitments. A Thinking of You card will be sent out to her from the chapter.
⬥Legislative-no new items to report at this time
⬥Scholarship- Irene shared about scholarship opportunities available to members ($2,000 for Masters degree; $4,000 for doctorate or advanced degree/credential) on the DKG CA website under resources tab. There are 2 deadlines for submissions-December and June. The chapter unanimously approved the nomination for Susan Lance to receive a Distinguished Public Service award for her tireless work with the Children’s Benefit League who have raised over $80,000+ to fund five local California charities. Suzanne Fraser and Irene Lonergan will be writing letters of recommendation to begin the process.
⬥Nominations-committee members Angela Loya, Irene Longergan, Suzanne Fraser, and Karen Bowen will be contacting members about chairing or co chairing available offices. Members were also encouraged to “shadow” current officers to get a sense of duties.
Old Business:
⬥Chapter’s financial records for audit have been completed by Karen Bowen and will be submitted by Shauna Grover. The chapter thanks both members for their diligence and efforts with this important task.
New Business:
⬥Chapter vote on the proposed budget for upcoming year was tabled till next meeting when financial committee members are in attendance to present.
⬥ Members were encouraged to consider carpooling to upcoming meeting in November at Dottie Poole’s home in Laguna Woods and also advised to add additional time to driving to compensate for navigating the myriad of gates within the gated community. Members were reminded that program will be a “Book Talk” so please be prepared to bring/ and or share a meaningful book.
