by Irene Lonergan Gamma Zeta Chapter has again selected a Scholarship Recipient from applications submitted to Cal State University Long Beach, Department of Teacher Education. Our commitment to women entering the teaching field began many years ago. In the beginning we supported women students at Long Beach City College and then continued our support at CSULB until they finished their degree. In the last three years, our Scholarship/Awards Chairman, Dr. Sumie Imada has been our liaison with CSULB’s Department of Teacher Education, reading as many as eight scholarship applications before selecting three to place before our members for a vote in April. The name of our selected recipient and a check for $1000 are sent to the Department of Teacher Education in March for the Fall and Spring semesters at the Urban Teaching Academy. Our recipient is enrolled in the U-Teach Program in the Urban Teaching Academy which provides student teaching and methods classes to those students who already have an undergraduate degree. | Eight to ten Master Teachers and CSULB professors, supervise the students and teach the Methods Classes at the primary and upper grade sites where the Student Teaching takes place. Reading, science, and math classes plus student teaching are taken the first semester and language arts and social studies classes plus student teaching are taken the second semester. This provides a very good support system for the students because there are more resources and opportunities for timely mentoring on the site. Gamma Zeta members, Linda Norman and Kim Goforth represented our Chapter at an inspiring Scholarship Recipient Reception at CSULB last September. Over the years, our recipients have attended our special meetings and events where we always enjoy hearing about their student teaching experiences and their job placements. Our members have always supported the next generation of teachers and work very hard every year to raise money solely for this purpose. |
