The Inspirational was from an incident in Helen Keller’s life read by Shirley Lamphear.
The October 9th Minutes were approved as sent out.
The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Karen Bowen as follows:
Balance on November 12, 2013
Checking Account $1,744.31
Savings Account 3,191.03
Total $4,935.34
It will be filed for audit.
Karen Bowen also distributed the Approved Budget for 2013-2014. Karen noted that the Liability Insurance required by the Paramount Library will be given to them on time for our March 6th meeting.
Old Business
Jackie Wayman shared a newspaper article about the Little Neighborhood Library concept and noted that we will table further movement on that idea until Spring 2014.
New Business
Updates from the November Presidents’ Meeting- Sue Lance explained that the monthly Presidents’ Meetings are a time to share ideas and help Presidents with their job. Area XII will have a Spring Newsletter about “Who we are and what makes us proud”. Gamma Zeta’s Communication Committee (Linda Norman, Marsha Gastelum, and Irene Lonergan) will prepare an article due April 1, 2014. Suggestions are: Golden Rose Recipient with photo; Whole Child gift wrapping event with Alpha Chi with group photo; Introduce our Honorary Member- Dora Jacilldo. Area XII’s Newsletter will compete with all the other Areas in Chi State and of course, Area XII hopes to win. Our Gamma Zeta website links to Area XII’s Newsletter.
April 12, 2014 is the Spring Conference at The Grand in Long Beach. All Chapters will donate a $25 gift card and ours will be for California Pizza Kitchen. Also, every Chapter will make a themed basket for the Conference raffle. Shirley Lamphear and Kim Goforth will put together a Gardening themed basket. All baskets will be worth $50. It was decided that each member will be assessed $5.00 in order to pay for the basket and the money will be given to Shirley or Kim at the January meeting.
Money was collected for World Fellowship at the Presidents’ Meeting. The 2013-2014 World Fellowship recipients were divided between the twelve Chapters in Area XII. The three for Gamma Zeta are:

(3) Kohila Mahadevan is from Sri Lanka and is pursuing a Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. Her birthday is 1/17. Email: [email protected]

Angela Loya spoke about supporting a new 5th grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary, Jessica Arragon. A motion was made by Sue Lance that we establish a new teacher fund and start collecting money (whatever a member is able to give) at each meeting. It was seconded by Dr. Sumie Imada and was approved. A new teacher fund basket will be available at each meeting. Members may give cash, but only checks will be tax deductible. In June, the money collected throughout the year will be given to the designated new teacher.
On December 2nd, Sue Lance, Dottie Poole, and Angela Loya will go shopping for Christmas gifts for the children of Whole Child in Whittier. Sue Lance will contact Whole Child to compile the names, ages and sizes of the children.
Committees
Awards/Scholarships- Dr. Sumie Imada shared a picture and letter about our Scholarship recipient, Raeann Marti and will call Cal State College, College of Education for the date that our check is due.
Nominations- Suzanne Fraser, as Nominations Committee Chair, will begin thinking about new officer nominations due by February. Jackie Wayman explained that each new officer will be presented with a ceramic rose made out of sea shell and each Chapter will pay for their own officers’ roses.
Program- Kim Goforth ( one of our new members and a 6th grade teacher with the Paramount School District) presented an overview of the Common Core State Standards. 2013-2014 will be a transition period with full implementation by 2014-2015. Forty five out of fifty states will implement them. The goal is for students to read complex text independently and proficiently in every discipline and write argumentative and explanatory text in every discipline. There will be a push to nonfictional reading with high school being 75% nonfiction and 25% fiction. For implementation, there will be more creativity of schools and teachers. The idea is that this will prepare students better for college and the workplace.
Membership- Angela compiled our membership’s profile and shared that information tonight. Chi State will collect the Chapters’ profiles and will do a State Profile.
Correspondence- Jackie Wayman read a thank you note from Marsha Gastelum for her retirement gift from our Chapter.
Gamma Zeta Website- Jackie Wayman paid $59 for a 6 month trial use to have a Gamma Zeta Website. Some of the advantages of the Website are that we could have Minutes, Yearbook, Newsletter, and membership news there. This would save money so that we would not have to produce a Yearbook for each member each year. It would be archived there for you to refer to or you could make your own copy from your printer. Changes could be made easily to the Yearbook each year. Maps to meetings could be there. We would access it by Password. Jackie sent around permission pages to designate what you would agree to permit on the Website (name, address, phone, e-mail, photo, your writings, your artwork). Jackie noted that we need to all agree on the parameters of the Website to proceed and it is imperative that she knows everyone’s’ wishes. Members received a Delta Kappa Gamma business card printed by Jackie with their invitation to the gift wrapping meeting at Jackie’s home. Members not attending tonight will receive the card and invitation in the mail. On the back of the card is the Gamma Zeta Website (http://gammazetachistate.weebly.com) and the password which is under Delta Kappa Gamma (it begins with W).
(Sumie moved that we reimburse Jackie for costs of website of $59. It was seconded and approved).
