Delta Kappa Gamma Society International
Chi State: Area XII: Gamma Zeta Chapter
May 15, 2014
The meeting was Called to Order by Co-President Jackie Wayman at 6:10 p.m. after everyone helped themselves to the delicious chicken taco salad bar prepared by Shirley Lamphear.
The Inspirational was about Ace the Arts. Linda Norman and Eileen Motzkin, as members of the Visual and Performing Arts Committee of Chi State, are working toward member participation in the arts at monthly meetings and other Delta Kappa Gamma gatherings. At the Chi State Convention this month, approximately 30 participated in visual arts by displaying watercolor paintings, needle point work, quilts, etc. and in performing arts by piano, dance, and song selections. All participants were juried and awards were presented. Ace the Arts gives members an opportunity to share their skills with Delta Kappa Gamma members and should be kept in mind if you would like to participate at the Chi State Convention next Spring, or if you would like to share your skills at a meeting, let Linda know.
The March 6, 2014 Minutes were approved as sent out.

Old Business
- Please bring money to the June breakfast to support our new teacher or send money to Karen Bowen and designate new teacher fund.
- LIFE Foundation sent us a letter stating that our request for a grant to build our Little Library did not fit the criteria set forth by them. Co-President Jackie Wayman noted that we will table the Little Library project for the future. LIFE gives grants for books, and Shirley Lamphear talked about the need for Spanish books for the Paramount High School library. We may submit another grant in the future.
- THAT hours will be submitted on-line directly to Chi State starting in Fall. Linda Norman will demonstrate how to do that before the October 2014 deadline.
New Business
- Karen Bowen will submit Convention registration and hotel bills to be paid up to amount budgeted ($250) for incoming President.
- Convention reports: Karen Bowen reported on two sessions to improve membership and one about Close Reading, a part of Common Core. It is a way to look at stories in a more specific way. She also brought back a Chi State DVD about Delta Kappa Gamma history and our Founders. Linda Norman reported some statistics from Convention: Delta Kappa Gamma has 80,000 members in 18 countries. There were 568 members at the Chi State Convention. The State of California will give 11.8 billion to schools for 2014-2015 which amounts to $8724 per pupil for 2014-2015. Linda was in charge of music and reported the choir did a nice job.
- Jackie Wayman will have a Website Training Summer Session at her house maybe the second week of July. Members attending will learn how to get on Facebook and access our Gamma Zeta Website. More information will follow.
