Chi State: Area XII: Gamma Zeta Chapter
October 9, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Co-President Sue Lance after a delicious soup buffet provided by Angela Loya at her home. Sue welcomed Jill Gutierrez from Buena Vista Continuation High School, Paramount School District, Angela Loya’s guest, and Dora Jacildo, Director of Children Today.
Angela Loya asked Dora to bring our members up to date on Children Today. She reported that they have purchased a new building at Spring St. and Long Beach Blvd. across the street from Long Beach Memorial Hospital. They are in the process of remolding the building and it will increase capacity by 36%.
Sue Lance gave the Inspirational about the Art of Living: Look to the future and do what pleases you in retirement.
This led into the celebration of the retirement of members Marsha Gastelum and Bev Todd and the presentation of beautifully inscribed Brighton clocks as gifts from our Chapter.
The September 9, 2013 Minutes were approved as sent out.
Jackie Wayman noted that our new Gamma Zeta website is http://gammazetachistate.weebly.com.
Treasurer’s Report was presented by Treasurer Karen Bowen as follows:
Balance on Hand as of October 9, 2013
Checking Account $1,836.06
Savings Account 3,191.03
Total $5,027.09
Karen reported that we now have 17 active members and no reserve members. We have lost touch with Louise Chamberlain who was moving this summer and changing her e-mail address. She has been dropped from membership at this time, but may be reinstated when we hear from her.
Karen presented the 2013-2014 budget. Expenses were discussed and corrections were made. The membership voted to accept the budget as changed and the final budget will be presented at the next meeting.
Old Business
Gamma Zeta 2013-2014 Project Plans: Little Neighborhood Library. Members could visit Little Libraries.com website to better understand this project. Members should think about where a little neighborhood library could be placed to attract families walking to school, easy access for members to restock gently used books if needed, and a possible Eagle Scout project to help us.
New Business
Suzanne Fraser has offered to sell some jewelry from her mother at the next meeting so bring extra money –you may find your perfect treasure!
The meeting adjourned with the singing of the Delta Kappa Gamma Song.
Respect submitted,
Irene Lonergan, Recording Secretary

New Business
- The March 6th meeting will be at the Paramount Library. It will be celebrating it’s 100th birthday and we will celebrate Gamma Zeta’s birthday at that time too. Karen will call our insurance company about getting Proof of Liability which the library requires before our meeting. Members will bring children’s books, especially, but all books are welcome.
- Co-President Jackie Wayman presented the updated Gamma Zeta Chapter Rules which were blended with the new Chi State format. They used to be called Chapter By-Laws. Two official copies of the Chapter Rules will be kept in the President’s file and the other copy will be in the Recording Secretary’s file. Also, the updated version will be sent to Chi State for their files. These Chapter Rules will be posted on our Chapter website. Co-President Sue Lance and the other members thanked Jackie for taking on this difficult job.
- Sumie Imada, Scholarship/Award Chairwomen, reported on the Student Teacher we supported last year. She gave a history of what she is doing and where she is teaching. Sumie received a thank you note from the Education Department of Cal State University, Long Beach for our support and was invited to see the Urban University Campus (UTEACH). Sumie will invite our new scholarship recipient to future meetings.
- Corresponding Secretary, Marsha Gastelum asked members to remember those not with us tonight by signing cards to let them know we miss them and we hope to see them soon.
- Yearbooks were passed out to members. Those not attending tonight will get their Yearbook in the mail. Corrections and additions were made to Yearbooks. We are trying to collect all cell phone numbers this year.
