Chi State Convention Intersession Reports:
*One speaker presented her research into the theory of wind power and kites possibly to lift bricks when the Pyramids were built.
*The founder of Baby Einstein and Baby Mozart explained how she went from a small business in her home, to selling it to Disney for $25 million.
*One speaker went through cancer and then wrote a book about how to explain it to children.
*One speaker told about using a deck of cards to help children learn math. facts.
*If you wanted to learn how to self-publish a book, there was a speaker that presented that information.
*Author Camron Wright wrote the book, The Rent Collector about his experiences as a Mormon missionary in Cambodia. In the book, a young mother collected garbage to sell recyclables to feed her family. Camron Wright was skyped at the Convention so that everyone could hear his recollections and ask questions. Jackie Wayman leant her copy of his book to a member.
*Jackie went to a making a website class. At the June meeting she will have a paper for each member to sign to give permission to post pictures.
There was a discussion of reimbursement for Convention. We budgeted $250 for Convention and Jackie Wayman will decide how that will be distributed. We may have to clarify how the money will be spent in the future, i.e. only for out of town, only President, only registration, etc.
Chi State is increasing dues by $5.00 for active and reserve. It was moved, seconded, and approved to increase our Gamma Zeta Chapter dues by $5 so our dues will be $90 active and $45 reserve.
Chapter jewelry and pins- We need to clarify that initiates will pay for their own pin. Our two initiates, Shirley Lamphear and Kim Goforth will order and pay for their pins tonight. Susan Myers suggested that we put in our By-Laws that the Chapter will pay for a pin for an honorary member.
Committee of Work
Awards/Scholarships
Dr. Sumie Imada reported that she read 12 or 13 applications for our scholarship. She selected 3 and presented those to our members tonight. We voted for Brianna Moshenko to be our scholarship recipient for 2013 Fall semester at CSULB. She is interested in physical education as it applies to children with disabilities; perhaps an adaptive P.E. teacher. She has been a swimming instructor and has high recommendations from her professors. The alternate candidate will be Blanco Rojas who would like to teacher English, and she has high recommendations for working with children also.
Jackie Wayman presented the certificate and pin to our Chapter’s Golden Rose recipient, Sue Lance. We are very fortunate to have Sue as a member of Gamma Zeta since 1978 and Jackie thanked her for her service to our Chapter.
Linda Norman was presented with the Delta Kappa Gamma Society 20 year membership pin and certificate. Jackie presented this award and thanked Linda for her service to our Chapter and Area XII.
Communications
Sue Lance will be sending a sympathy card to Juanita Rivas on the death of her sister.
The meeting was adjourned to begin Initiation for Shirley Lamphear and Kim Goforth.
Respectfully submitted,
Irene Lonergan, Recording Secretary
